Lieutenant Mattias is imperfect

Lieutenant Matthias was King Runeard’s lieutenant. His sworn oath to protect the Kingdom of Arendelle at all costs led to him being imprisoned in an enchanted forest for 34 long, dismal years. Nevertheless, this honourable man continues to carry himself with a dignity that reveals a man in full possession of himself. How many men in our current public life could we say carry themselves in such a way? Yes, Exactly.

There were 2 more aspects of Matthias that drew me to him over Elsa; the first was his voice. His character was voiced by the dashing American actor, Sterling K Brown who played Randall Pearson in the winningly winsome TV show This Is Us.

Randall is the black boy of adoptive white parents, struggling to find his identity in his white family and to overcome his bookish awkwardness. Overcome he does however, thriving as a business hot shot and landing the big house and all the accoutrements of wealth. Despite his outward success, his mental health struggles are never far from the surface. We grow to love him for his courage and his vulnerability which, at times, he is powerless to hide.

Lieutenant Mattias is also a man of colour. I’d like to explain why this has particular resonance for me.
